Equipping Greenville students for school

GREENVILLE — It may seem like summer has just begun, but two local organizations are gearing up for annual events that supply Greenville students with backpacks and school supplies for the upcoming year.

Tools for School and the Back to School Extravaganza, which is hosted by the Greenville North Community Association, will both take place in August.

Tools for School will be held on Aug. 10 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church, located at 6801 Wesley Street. The event serves students in grades K-6. The event will run from 8 to 10 a.m., although most backpacks will be distributed in the first hour, according to Kristi Horne.

Approximately 150 volunteers are needed for the event, according to Horne.

“We need volunteers for two parts of the event,” she said. “On Aug. 8, we need volunteers to help pack backpacks, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Ridgecrest Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. We pack until we’re finished. It’s truly a come-and-go event; if you can give an hour, we’ll take and hour. It’s very relaxed.”

Individuals can also volunteer for a variety of assignments during day of the event, Aug 10. Those volunteers will receive a T-shirt and will help out by guiding families through the event, handing out backpacks and helping with safety and security. The deadline for individuals to volunteer and still receive a T-shirt is July 29.

“We keep everyone busy,” Kristi said. “Helping guide the families and handing out backpacks are two of our most popular assignments. We have people that come back every year to walk the families through the event; they really enjoying interacting with the families.”

Parents can register to receive a backpack full of school supplies from either event on Aug. 5 in Ridgecrest Baptist Church’s Activities Building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.; on Aug. 6 at Love and Faith Fellowship at 1009 Rees Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and in the Activities Building from 5 to 7 p.m.; and on Aug. 7 at Love and Faith Fellowship from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.

In order to register, parents must bring a student’s most recent report card, certificate of completion or enrollment card.

Tools for School also offers immunizations. To receive immunization, parents need to bring their child’s immunization record and, if they are on Medicaid, their Medicaid card.

Haircuts will also be provided at Tools for School, and parents can sign their children up for haircuts when they register. However, the haircuts will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The non-profit organization accepts donations of both money and supplies.
