County unemployment spikes again

Students leaving school in June and seeking jobs for the summer were apparently unsuccessful, as the local unemployment rate spiked last month.

Although unemployment is at its highest level of the year so far, Hunt County’s jobless figures remain well below where they were at the same point one year ago, according to a report released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).

Hunt County was listed with a 7.4 percent unemploymente last month, compared to 6.9 percent unemployment in June and a 9.4 percent unemployment rate in June 2012. The rate from June of last year was the highest ever seen for the month in Hunt County.

There were 38,025 people reported on the job last month, representing a loss of 89 jobs since May, but the addition of 1,009 jobs in the past 12 months.

A  total of 3,038 people were reported to have filed for unemployment in Hunt County last month, an increase of  232 people since May, but 767 fewer people than in June 2012.

Hunt County is listed by the Texas Workforce Commission as part of the Dallas-Plano-Irving Metropolitan Division, which also includes Dallas, Collin, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman and Rockwall counties.

Delta County recorded the division’s highest unemployment rate last month, at 8.3 percent unemployment. Dallas County posted a 7.2 percent unemployment rate and Kaufman County registered 7.1 percent unemployment in June.

Collin and Denton counties tied for the region’s lowest unemployment rate last month, at 6.1 percent, with Rockwall County at 6.4 percent  and Ellis County recording 6.7 percent unemployment during June.

Among other nearby counties, Fannin County posted a 9.2 percent unemployment rate during June, Hopkins County 6.1 percent, Lamar County 8.7 percent, Rains County 7.2 percent and Van Zandt County listed a 6.6 percent unemployment rate last month.
