Saluting another fallen hero

GREENVILLE — Once again, the body of a fallen American soldier arrived at Majors Field Municipal Airport Wednesday.

And, once again, a crowd of patriotic individuals turned out to welcome United States Army Spc. Joseph Michael Lewis of Terrell as he began his final journey home. Lewis, 26, died on Nov. 17 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.

Dozens of current and former soldiers, law enforcement and fire department personnel and a host of others joined Lewis’ family members and friends in greeting the arrival of a charter jet which carried the soldier’s body. Many joined in a motorcade which departed the airport and traveled the distance to Terrell, while others lined the route waving flags and continuing the salute.

At one location, the golfers who were on the course at Oak Creek County Club paused their games and drove their carts to the edge of Farm-To-Market 1570/Jack Finney Boulevard.

The motorcade carried Lewis to the Anderson Clayton Brothers Funeral Home in Terrell, where visitation is scheduled from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday.

Funeral services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Terrell.
