Teen crime solvers get to work

GREENVILLE — More than two dozen local teenagers will get an up-close look this week at how the Greenville Police Department operates.

The current class of the Teen Police Academy began Monday, with 30 students enrolled in the course and is scheduled to conclude Friday.

“They are going to be experiencing a lot of neat stuff,” said Student Services Officer James Hamilton.

The Teen Police Academy is the final program under the 17th Annual Summer of Safety, presented by the Greenville Police Department. Hamilton, along with fellow Student Services Officer Richard Calender, has overseen the activities.

Teenage students who have an interest in law enforcement as a career, or just a desire to learn more about police work in general, are taking part in the free class, which is scheduled to run through Friday.

The course offers insight into aspects such as Crime Scene Investigation, Hostage Negotiations, Tactical Team, Patrol Procedures, and Accident Investigation. Students will get to ride out with officers and work a mock crime scene.

Unlike previous sessions, Hamilton said the students this time around will be focusing primarily on collecting evidence at the mock crime scene, rather than trying to solve the offense.

“And then they need to be able to connect the evidence they found to the crime itself,” Hamilton said, noting the students will learn just how tricky it can be to properly handle the evidence they find, and to preserve it so it can be used during a prosecution.

Those wanting more information about any of the Summer of Safety programs can contact Calender at 903-453-0435 or by email at rcalender@ci.greenville.tx.us, or can contact Hamilton at 903-453-0432 or by email at jhamilton@ci.greenville.tx.us.
