GCS students display their creativity

GREENVILLE — Students at Greenville Christian School displayed a culmination of almost a year’s worth of art during Thursday’s  GCS Art Show.

Cody Giles, art teacher at GCS, said by giving the students a venue to display their artwork, it increases their creativity.

“It’s an opportunity for the kids to show off their artwork to the public,” he said.

As a teacher, Giles said his job is to foster his students’ creativity to produce art for a crowd.

“What I really try to do is give them ideas,” he said. “I try not to control their creative process too much.”

This is Giles’ second year at GCS.

When he first arrived at the school, the art show was a part of the open house the school has for the public.

Giles said growing up in the art scene, he was accustomed to dedicated art shows, so he wanted to have a separate day for the students to display their artwork.

By having it on a separate day, Giles said it helps to improve his students’ confidence in their ability.

“It lets the students know that they are important enough that people would come out to support it,” he said.

Giles said he currently does not have a limit for the amount of pieces his students can submit.

“They just keep producing stuff and we put it in for the show,” he said.

The show took two days to put together, and Giles said he owes a lot to members of the community, especially Duane and Kaleb Fulton, and Jennifer Arnold.

“I give a big thanks to her for helping,” he said.

Giles said he hopes the show will continue to grow so more people can view the quality artwork his students can produce.

“I do this because I want to grow the art department and bring culture to Greenville Christian School,” he said. “It gives them more initiative to create something they want to see and are proud of.”
