Day of Prayer calls for unity

GREENVILLE — A call for unity was the focus of the local observance of Thursday’s 63rd annual National Day of Prayer at the Hunt County Courthouse.

“One Voice United In Prayer” was the theme for this year’s event, which drew a crowd to the north steps of the courthouse.

“The unity of us here and the unity of all those across the nation,” said Rev. Bill Shaddox with Salem-Kinser United Methodist Church during his opening remarks.

Thursday’s celebration included the Greenville Ministerial Fellowship joining in the singing of “How Great Thou Art”; a prayer for the City of Greenville by Rev. Melva Hill with Ebenezer Baptist Church, a prayer for the nation from Rev. Jose Amaya with Ridgecrest Bautista; a prayer for the military offered by Rev. Stanley Hammond; congregation songs from David Gish with St. Paul Episcopal and Becky Shasteen with Pecan Grove Church; a prayer for pastors from Rev. Raymond Zifer with Victory Life; a prayer for the city council and Emergency Medical Technicians from Rev. Marvin McPherson from True Vine Missionary Baptist; a prayer for schools by Rev. Dessie Brown Sr. with Mount Olive Baptist; a prayer for churches offered by Father Gary Herbst with St. Paul’s Episcopal; a prayer for the economy from Rev. Veronica Greanead with Westview United Methodist; a congregation song from Chris Otto with Authentic Life Fellowship and a closing prayer from Rev. Brian Keith Thomas from Carter Temple C.M.E.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.
