Guilty plea given in child injury case

GREENVILLE —  A local woman has pleaded guilty to seriously injuring a child in Greenville in February of last year.

Tonya Ann Rodriguez, 40, of Greenville, was indicted by the Hunt County grand jury on one count of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.

During a hearing Tuesday in the 354th District Court Rodriguez entered an open plea of guilty to a lesser included charge of recklessly injuring a child causing serious bodily injury. Judge Richard A. Beacom accepted the plea and scheduled a sentencing hearing before a jury on June 16.

Rodriguez was alleged in the original indictment to have intentionally caused a spiral fracture to the right leg of a child of less than 14 years of age on Feb. 19, 2013.

Rodriguez was arrested by the Greenville Police Department on May 9, 2013 and was indicted in August of last year.

The current charge alleges Rodriguez acted recklessly in causing the injury.

Entering an open plea means that no plea bargain agreement had been arranged in the case and that Rodriguez is subject to the full range of punishment.

The charge is a second degree felony, punishable upon conviction by a maximum sentence of from two to 20 years in prison and an optional fine of up to $10,000.
