New track, turf needed at high school stadium

GREENVILLE — The Greenville Independent School District Board of Trustees is scheduled again this week to consider approving expenditures for repairs at local campuses.

The stadium at Greenville High School is in need of a new track and playing field, while the roof over the Greenville Middle School gymnasium needs to be replaced.

Votes on both items are included under Tuesday’s regular agenda, starting at 6 p.m. in the Wesley Martin Administration Building, 4004 Moulton Street.

According to a memo presented to the board, the turf and track at T. A. Cotton Ford Stadium was installed and first used during the fall of 2003 and has more than exceeded its eight year warranty and life expectancy. The Greenville ISD is now at the point of replacing the turf and track or having to use another location for events. In order to attempt to have the turf and track replacement completed in time for the 2014 fall semester, work must be started immediately after graduation.

The administration requested quotes, interviewed the four vendors that responded and is recommending using Paragon Sports Constructors for the job, which is expected to cost no more than $760,000, with the money available in the district’s fund balance.

The Board is also looking at needed repairs at Greenville Middle School. The roof of the old gym at the school is reported to be in poor shape and in December the board was informed the repairs would cost approximately $37,000.

The money is to come from a supplemental insurance settlement payment of $155,993 the district received as a result of a 2008 claim for hail damage.

The Board is scheduled to vote on approving the purchase of $37,300.00 to R&B Roofing.
