Chance to sign up for safe room rebates

— Hunt County residents can begin signing up this week for a chance to get a rebate toward the cost of installing a “safe room” in their home.

Hunt County Homeland Security Director Richard Hill said the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) will be opening an online wait list for the North Central Texas Safe Room Rebate Program (NCTRRP), starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The NCTCOG, in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is offering grants for as much as $3,000 to cover up to half of the cost of the installation and construction of safe rooms.

Hill said once the wait list for a county has been opened, it will not close. But you might not hear back right away.

It may take between three and 18 months for a response once someone’s name has been added to the wait list.

In order to participate, applicants must be living or developing in Hunt County, must be the homeowner; contractors/developers may apply but are capped at three safe rooms; must not be living or developing in a 100 year floodplain or be listed in the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA); and must contract with a National Storm Shelter Association (NSSA) or American Tornado Association (ATSA) certified supplier.

Additional information about the program is available online at www.nctcog.org.

The wait list will be open to all 16 counties in the NCTCOG region.
