County jobless rate rises during May

GREENVILLE — Hunt County’s jobless figures rose significantly during May, as the county’s job market transitioned from the school year to the start of summer.

Despite the increase, local unemployment remained at its lowest point for the month in five years, more people were employed last month than during any other May this century and more than 110 jobs were added during the month, according to a report issued Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).

Hunt County’s unemployment rate during May was reported at 6.8 percent, representing an increase from the 6.1 percent unemployment recorded during April, but well below the 8.6 percent unemployment seen during May 2012.

There were 38,148 people listed as employed in the county during May, 119 more than in April and 1,102 more than twelve months earlier. More people were reported employed in Hunt County last month than during any other May this century and last month’s employment numbers were the highest this year.

However, there were 2,805 people filing for unemployment locally last month, 339 more than in April , but 659 fewer than in May of last year. The unemployment rate for May was the lowest for the month since 2008.

Hunt County is listed by the TWC as part of the Dallas-Plano-Irving Metropolitan Division, which also includes Dallas, Collin, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman and Rockwall counties.

Delta County recorded the division’s highest May unemployment rate, at 8.4 percent, while Dallas County tied with Hunt County at 6.8 percent unemployment last month. Kaufman County posted 6.4 percent unemployment during the month and Ellis County reported 6.3 percent unemployment during May.

Denton County recorded the division’s lowest unemployment rate during May, at 5.6 percent. Collin County posted 5.7 percent unemployment last month with Rockwall County listing a 5.8 percent May unemployment rate .

Among other nearby counties, Fannin County posted an 8.8 percent unemployment rate during May, Hopkins County 5.6 percent, Lamar County 8.3 percent, Rains County 6.8 percent and Van Zandt County posted a 6.2 percent unemployment rate during May.
