Rains not helping Lake Tawakoni

The middle of June has been a wet one for Greenville and Hunt County.

Although the county has seen two big rain events in recent days, the precipitation has not helped raise the level on Lake Tawakoni.

A severe thunderstorm dumped between one-half and one inch of rain in Greenville between 6:35 and 7:55 p.m. Saturday.

Powerful thunderstorms brought another inch of precipitation to the city Monday morning.

Frequent bursts of lightning and small hail accompanied the storms on both occasions. Monday’s storms also resulted in scattered power outages while Saturday’s high winds blew down power lines.

The National Weather Service was predicting another round of thunderstorms could cross North Texas between Monday night and early this morning.

Even with the rain, the level on Lake Tawakoni was listed at 431.5 feet Monday afternoon, six feet below its normal pool elevation.

No water usage restrictions are currently in place for the City of Greenville, although cities served by the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD), which provides water to more than 1.6 million north Texas residents, including those served by the Caddo Basin Special Utility District and the Cash Special Utility District in Hunt County, are currently under Stage 3 outdoor watering restrictions.
