Deadline nears to file in primaries

— Time is running out for candidates, seeking to get on the ballots for either next year’s Democratic or Republican party primary elections, to officially file their campaigns.

With less than a week remaining in the filing period, few contested races have developed among candidates for county offices in either primary and one incumbent is indicating he is not seeking re-election.

Hunt County Commissioner Precinct 2 Jay Atkins, who had previously announced on his Facebook page that he was considering a campaign for county judge, took to the page Monday afternoon to reveal he would not be filing in the upcoming Republican primary.

“I have decided that I will not run for any office,” Atkins said. “My disgust for all things political is just too great to overcome. May God help this great land!”

Tod McMahan has filed for the Republican Party primary for the office of Hunt County Commissioner Precinct 2 and as of Monday was the only candidate to have done so.

More than a dozen county candidates have either filed for the Republican primary, or have announced their intentions to file for the election. Only two Democrats in Hunt County had filed as of Wednesday.

Filing for the March 4, 2014 Democratic and Republican Party primaries continues through December 9. Candidates seeking an office in a particular county file with their respective county Democratic or Republican Party offices. Candidates whose jurisdiction covers multiple counties file with the state party offices.

Next year, Hunt County voters will be casting ballots for congress, state senate, state representative, county judge, 196th district court, district clerk, county court at law No. 1, county clerk, county commissioners in precincts 2 and 4, justices of the peace and constables.
