Former teacher admits to student relationship

GREENVILLE — A former teacher for the Quinlan Independent School District has pleaded guilty to having had an improper relationship with a student.

Jennifer Renae Hayes was placed on probation, fined and ordered to register as a sex offender, as a result of a hearing Tuesday in the 354th District Court.

Hayes resigned from the district shortly after the incident was first reported last fall.

Hayes was indicted by the Hunt County grand jury in November 2012 on one count each of improper relationship between educator and student and sexual assault of a child and had previously pleaded not guilty to both counts.

Hayes pleaded guilty Tuesday to the improper relationship count and under a plea agreement was placed on 10 years of deferred adjudication probation with sex offender terms, 200 hours of community service and a $1,000 fine. Hayes was also ordered to surrender her Texas Educator’s Certificate. The sexual assault of a child count was dismissed under the agreement.

The indictment alleged Hayes, 26, of Caddo Mills, engaged in sex with a male of less than 17 years of age who was a student at Ford High School on or about Oct. 28, 2012.

Hayes was reported to have resigned her position with the district on Nov. 5, 2012.

Deferred adjudication probation carries no finding of guilt, although those defendants who are found to have violated a deferred probation are subject to being sentenced to the maximum punishment.

The charge is a second-degree felony, punishable upon conviction by a maximum sentence of from two to 20 years in prison and an optional fine of up to $10,000.
