Strong storms in today’s forecast

GREENVILLE — Greenville and Hunt County have a chance today at experiencing the year’s first round of severe thunderstorms.

While the worst of the weather in the National Weather Service forecast is expected to the south and west of the immediate area, strong winds and small hail may be possible with the storms which are due pass through the region. There is also a chance of some much needed heavy rainfall by tonight.

As of Friday evening, there had been no watches or warnings issued regarding today’s expected weather event across North and Central Texas, which was forecast to reach the area by this afternoon. Some of the storms will be strong to severe, especially for areas to the southwest where the atmosphere will become more unstable.

Up to one inch of rain is expected in the immediate vicinity.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected mainly between 1 p.m. today and 1 a.m. Sunday, with a high near 68 and a low around 49 overnight, and with winds shifting out of the north by Sunday morning.

Sunday’s high temperature is predicted to only reach 52 degrees, before it begins falling behind north winds which could gust as high as 35 mph.

City of Greenville officials are recommending residents sign up for CodeRED, a high speed telephone communication service that can deliver customized, pre-recorded emergency messages directly to homes and businesses at the rate of 60,000 calls per hour.

The CodeRED system uses intranet mapping which allows for calls to be placed to a certain geographic area of Greenville, or city-wide as circumstances warrant. The system’s main purpose is to notify citizens or groups of citizens in emergency situations. The system has the ability to be used for non-emergency notifications as well.

The system has also been used to relay important information during periods of non-weather related situations or in the event of a missing or endangered individual.

Additional information about the CodeRED system is available on the City of Greenville web site at http://www.ci.greenville.tx.us.

Local residents who do not have Internet access that wish to sign up for CodeRED, may call the City Manager’s Office at 903-457-3116 or visit the W. Walworth Harrison Public Library for assistance.
