Hearing set for custody of seized dogs

GREENVILLE — A hearing is scheduled next week to determine who will take custody of dozens of dogs seized Tuesday from a south Hunt County residence.

Hunt County law enforcement officials joined with representatives from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Texas Tuesday in serving an evidentiary search warrant at the mobile home on County Road 3621, which resulted in the seizure of 45 dogs from the residence.

The investigation into the incident is continuing and animal cruelty charges are reportedly pending against the owner of the home.

The SPCA of Texas transported the animals to the Perry Animal Care Center in McKinney, where the small, mixed-breed dogs are being examined by medical staff and will be cared for until the custody hearing.

The custody hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at the office of Hunt County Justice of the Peace for Precinct 4 David McNabbb in Quinlan. If the SPCA of Texas is awarded custody of the animals, they would be individually evaluated for potential adoption or placement on a case by case basis.
