A community united in worship

GREENVILLE — A crowd of worshipers gathered at the steps of the Hunt County Courthouse Thursday afternoon, despite chilly temperatures and gusty north winds, to celebrate the local observance of the National Day of Prayer.

“We’re excited about coming together and being a community that comes together in praise,” said Rev. Lanse Moore with Faith Outreach, who lead off the event.

“Pray for America: Matthew 12:21” was the theme for the ceremony, which also featured congregational singing from Chris Otto with Authentic Life Fellowship, an introduction to prayers from Rev. Brian Keith Thomas with Carter Temple C.M.E., a prayer for families from Rev. Kelly Reagan with North Baptist Church, a prayer for schools from Rev. Dessie Brown with Mount Olive Baptist Church, a prayer for the community from Rev. Jose Amaya with Ridgecrest Bautista, a prayer for churches from Father Gary Herbst with Saint Paul Episcopal, a prayer for clergy from Rev. Brent Grissom with First Assembly of God, a prayer for first responders from Rev. Marvin McPherson with True Vine Missionary Baptist, a prayer for the military from Rev. Melvin Ray, the chaplain with Hunt Regional Healthcare, a prayer for outreach agencies from Lt. Kenny Jones with the Salvation Army, a prayer for local government from Rev. Phillip Dukes with Clark Street Christian Church, a prayer for the nation from Rev. Veronica Greanead with Westview United Methodist and a closing prayer from Rev. Melva Hill with Ebenezer Baptist.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

This year’s event in Greenville was sponsored by the Greenville Ministers Fellowship and the Greenville Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance.

Another community observance of the National Day of Prayer was scheduled for Thursday evening at the Lone Oak Civic Center.
