Bids due on former elementary school

GREENVILLE — Later this week, Greenville Independent School District officials will discover how much someone is willing to pay for the former Travis Elementary School.

Sealed bids are due Wednesday afternoon. The district has set a minimum bid of $70,000 for the site. What happens to the building at 3005 Division Street, which was the second location of Travis Elementary, will be up to whoever buys the property, if anyone does.

“As of today, we have not received any bids,” Kelli Tharp, Greenville ISD Director of Community Service, said Monday afternoon.

Travis Elementary School was consolidated with the Greenville Sixth Grade Center at the start of the 2010/2011 school year, after the elementary school building developed structural problems due to its age.

District officials say there ware no immediate plans to build another elementary, as the situation with the two schools sharing the one campus at 3201 Stanford Street appears to be working well. Superintendent Don Jefferies has said is the district does need to build an elementary school in the future, there is land available near the Hunt Regional Medical Center.
