Still waiting on jobless numbers

GREENVILLE — It has been a while since the unemployment statistics for Hunt County have been released.

Last we checked, the county was noting a boost in the number of people finding jobs. But that was back in September, when the figures from August were released by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).

Then came the federal government shutdown, which threw everything off kilter.

The TWC said it intends to make up for the gap Friday morning, as it releases the “Texas Labor Market Information” reports for both September and October.

According to information from the TWC, the lapse in federal funding due to the shutdown resulted in the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data collection, analysis, and dissemination activities to be suspended from October 1-16, which also affected state data collection, since TWC produces state economic data in cooperation with the BLS.

According to the report the TWC released in September, Hunt County had added more than 170 jobs between July and August, the local jobless figures remained well below where they were at the same time one year earlier and were at their lowest point in five years.

Hunt County was listed with a 6.4 percent unemployment rate during August, down from the 7.1 percent unemployment in July and also below the 8.4 percent unemployment rate recorded during August 2012.

The rate was the lowest for the month since August 2008, which saw 5.8 percent unemployment locally.
