Council expected to approve purchase of vehicles

GREENVILLE — The Greenville Police Department will be getting three new Chevrolet Tahoes, as the City Council is scheduled Tuesday to approve the purchase of the vehicles.

The vote is part of the consent calendar, which will be taken up during the regular session staring at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday.

In a memo to the Council, Finance Director Cliff Copeland said the Council included the purchase of three Tahoes in this year’s budget.

“The replacement of police vehicles is intended to maintain the necessary level of safety and reduce operating costs by eliminating excessive repairs to obsolete equipment and where repair costs exceed the vehicle’s value,” Copeland said. “The FY2012-2013 budget was approved with $132,882.00 for the replacement of three existing police vehicles.”

The new units will replace three patrol vehicles in the current police department fleet, one of which has been removed from service due to mechanical issues in which repair of the vehicle is not financially feasible.

“Police Patrol vehicles are in constant use and driven through adverse conditions which diminish the life span of the units,” Copeland explained. “The replacement of these units will be a direct benefit in the City’s ability to continue to ensure quick response to emergency calls and deliver quality service to the citizens of Greenville.”

The city received bids from two dealerships, with Caldwell County Chevrolet submitting the lowest bid.

“Total price for the purchase of the vehicles is $134,046 which includes the additional equipment,” Copeland said.

The extra $1,164 is to be funded using the balance from last year’s budget for police department Tahoes.
