Offering message for Memorial Day

GREENVILLE — As the event passed through Greenville Saturday afternoon, participants in the Carry The Load National Relay were starting to feel the emotions as they sought to help emphasize awareness of Memorial Day.

“A 2,000 mile journey is about to be complete,” said Carry The Load spokesperson Greg Barns. “Everything is starting to come full circle for us.”

The relay made four stops in Hunt County Saturday, including at the east end of Lee Street in downtown Greenville, on its way to its conclusion in Dallas Monday.

Carry the Load is a non-profit, founded by former Navy Seals to raise funds and awareness for veterans and their surviving families.

The 27 day national relay began in West Point, N.Y. and was designed to rejuvenate the true meaning and purpose of the Memorial Day holiday as a way to honor those who served and died in service to the United States.

“And by making sure we are treating these people, our veterans and our first responders, well,” Burns said.

It was the second year of the national relay and it was also second year of Burns’ involvement with the program.

“I did the full 20 hour event in Dallas last year,” Burns said.

To date Carry The Load has raised more than $1.1 million for — and is being used to raise awareness of — the veteran’s organizations it supports, which include Heroes On The Water, Snowball Express, Sons Of The Flag Burn Foundation, T.A.P.S., Team Red, White & Blue and Tip Of The Spear.
