Courthouse security finds methamphetamine in woman’s backpack

GREENVILLE — A security checkpoint is set up at the main entrance of the Hunt County Courthouse, where officers make routine checks of bags and purses, to ensure no weapons are being brought into the building.

Every now and then they find something else.

A woman from Caddo Mills was arrested last week after allegedly attempting to bring an amount of methamphetamine into the courthouse.

Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said the incident occurred at around 3:50 p.m. March 28, as Erin Lois Cribbs, 27, entered the courthouse.

“The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office Courthouse Security Officers checked the woman’s backpack as a routine check,” Meeks said. “Deputies smelled the distinct odor of possibly marijuana coming from the inside of the backpack. The deputy observed a small black bag inside.”

Inside the bag, Meeks said, was a small ziplock bag containing a white powder substance and two glass pipes that are commonly used to smoke methamphetamine.

“The female admitted to the deputy that the substance was ‘meth’,” Meeks said.

Cribbs was placed under arrest, charged with possession of a controlled substance and transported to the Hunt County Detention Center.

“I want to commend Deputy Aaron Cook for recognizing the possibility of illegal narcotics being brought into the Hunt County Courthouse,” Meeks said. “I know that it is an inconvenience and annoyance sometime for our citizens to have to go through these checks at the courthouse. However, in instances like this and other times that we have intercepted weapons, the small amount of inconvenience is worth the larger picture.”
