Sale of former elementary school pending

GREENVILLE — The Greenville Independent School District board of trustees could act tonight to sell the former Travis Elementary School in Greenville.

The property at 3005 Division Street received a single bid, prior to the July 22 deadline. No bids were received during two previous attempts to sell the site building and surrounding land.

The Greenville ISD board is scheduled to consider the bid when it meets this evening, during an executive session as part of the regular agenda, starting at 6 p.m. in the Wesley Martin Operations Center, 4004 Moulton Street in Greenville.

Should the board take any action concerning the property, it would return to open session to do so.

Superintendent Don Jefferies declined comment Monday when asked the identity of the potential buyer, indicating that since he had not yet presented the bid to the board, he could not reveal the information.

The district had previously sought sealed bids on the site, first with a minimum bid of $75,000 and then with a minimum bid of $70,000, but did not receive a single offer.

There were no minimum bids attached to the sale this time around.

Assistant Superintendent Bruce Shores said he had shown the building to prospective buyers on multiple occasions.

Travis Elementary School was consolidated with the Greenville Sixth Grade Center at the start of the 2010/2011 school year, saving the district almost $250,000 a year in personnel and other costs.

District officials say there are no immediate plans to build another elementary, as the situation with the two schools sharing the one campus at 3201 Stanford Street is working well.

Jefferies has said if the district does need to build an elementary school in the future, there is land available near the Hunt Regional Medical Center.
