Guilty plea, prison in 2012 armed robbery

GREENVILLE — A local man has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to an armed robbery from the summer of 2012, during which a man was beaten.

Caunte Howard, 18, also pleaded guilty to taking part in a residential burglary last spring, during a hearing in the 196th District Court.

Howard was one of three people who were alleged to have acted together to assault a male victim by striking him with a stick and/or a glass bottle while in the course of committing a theft on July 31, 2012.

Under a plea bargain arrangement, Howard was sentenced to eight years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Institutional Division.

As a deadly weapon was found to have been used during the robbery, Howard will have to spend at least half of the sentence, or four years, in custody before he can be eligible to be considered for parole.

The aggravated robbery charge is a first degree felony, punishable upon conviction by a maximum sentence of from five to 99 years to life in prison.

Howard pleaded guilty to one count of burglary of a habitation, for having been one of four people who broke into a Greenville residence on April 16, 2013 and to have stolen jewelry, a television, a firearm and/or currency. Howard was also sentenced to eight years in prison on the charge, to run concurrent with the robbery sentence.

Howard was facing up to 20 years in prison for the conviction.
