Former constable receives sentencing

ROCKWALL — Anthony Dewayne Lewis received prison sentences of 60 and 15 years Thursday in connection with a Feb. 16 shooting at the Harbor that left Jessica Aguilar dead and a male companion wounded.

Judge David Rakow of 439th District Court sentenced Lewis after the former Hunt County constable entered guilty pleas to murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The sentences were the result of a plea bargain arrangement.

The frail defendant wiped tears from his eyes several times during the brief proceedings. He broke down emotionally when his attorney, Reed Prospere, asked Lewis whether he pleaded guilty and waived a jury trial because “you didn’t want to put your family through this.”

Lewis sobbed for several seconds before answering.

Security was heavy in the fourth floor courtroom as about a dozen law enforcement officers were present during the hearing.

Also, there were more than a dozen family members and friends sitting behind Lewis. The victim was also represented by more than a dozen family members.

Victims’ statements were read by several of Aguilar’s family members. Lewis was stoic while listening to most of the statements but occasionally wiped a tear from his eyes. One family member told Lewis that he is “a disgrace and pathetic,” and “deserves a slow and painful death.”

Another family member said “I have no sympathy for you, whatsoever.”

The state was represented by district attorney Kenda Culpepper.

Aguilar, 33, of Rockwall was killed in the shooting while the second shooting victim was identified as Francisco Delacruz, 40, of Dallas.

Lewis is also facing indictments in Hunt County, in connection with the end of a chase later that evening.

Lewis’ vehicle was spotted by law enforcement a short time after the shootings and the pursuit began, ending on the service road of westbound Interstate 30 near the Monty Stratton Parkway. Officers at the scene reported that Lewis exited his vehicle and pointed a handgun at the officers.

Lewis was wounded in a standoff with officers. A 9 mm handgun in Lewis’ possession was recovered at the scene.

He was released from a hospital on March 11 and booked into Rockwall County Detention Center.

The Rockwall shooting is under investigation by the Rockwall Police Department and will be prosecuted by Rockwall County District Attorney Kenda Culpepper. The Hunt County shooting is under investigation by the Texas Rangers.
