Area woman sentenced to prison in ID theft case

GREENVILLE — A Hopkins County woman has learned stolen bank cards only work if you have the personal identification number.

Lindsay Ann Silcox, 34, of Sulphur Springs, was sentenced to prison Monday after pleading guilty to being in possession of dozens of stolen items of personal identification.

Silcox was caught as she repeatedly and unsuccessfully attempted to use a bank card in an automatic teller machine (ATM).

Silcox pleaded guilty to one count of fraudulent use or possession of identifying information-50 or more items.

During a hearing in the 354th District Court Monday, Judge Richard A. Beacom sentenced Silcox under a plea bargain arrangement to 10 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Institutional Division.

According to a criminal complaint, a Hunt County Sheriff’s Deputy was inside a convenience store at Interstate 30 and Farm-to-Market Road 1903 on Oct. 2, 2012, when he noticed Silcox attempting to use an ATM inside the business.

Upon checking, the deputy learned Silcox did not have the personal identification number to use the card, which was in another woman’s name.

The officer later found a wallet inside Silcox’s purse which contained multiple items of identification, and bottles of prescription medication, belonging to a woman who had reported them stolen earlier in the day.

The indictment against Silcox alleged she was in possession of the victims’ driver’s license, Social Security card, bank card, 22 checks and 22 carbon copies of checks.

The charge was a first degree felony, punishable upon conviction by a maximum sentence of from five to 99 years to life in prison and an optional fine of up to $10,000.
