Girl Scout cookie sales start Friday

GREENVILLE — Here is a breaking story for anyone with a sweet tooth in Hunt County.

Adorable young girls with big smiles and a vest with patches will be a common sight later this week, as sales of Girl Scout Cookies are scheduled to begin.

“We’ll kick-off orders for sales on Friday,” said Timberly Lyimo, the Girl Scouts Service Unit 171 Cookie Coordinator. “We’ll have 150 girls in Hunt County taking orders through January 28.”

The Girl Scouts will again be offering all of the favorites; including Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-si-dos, Trefoils, Savannah Smiles and Thank U Berry Munch.

Girl Scout Cookies can be purchased only from girls and only during cookie season.

“Booth sales will start at the end of February,” Lyimo said.

According to the official history of the cookies from www.girlscouts.org, Girl Scout Cookies began in the kitchens and ovens of members. The sale of cookies as a way to finance troop activities began as early as 1917, five years after Juliette Gordon Low started Girl Scouting in the United States, when the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Okla., baked cookies and sold them in its high school cafeteria as a service project.

The boxes may look a little different this year. The new packaging is designed to highlight real Girl Scouts who are making the world a better place and the five skills they can learn; including goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.
