At the old ball game

GREENVILLE — Fans of the former Greenville Majors intend to gather today, to commemorate the 64th anniversary of the day when the team beat the New York Yankees.

A brief ceremony is scheduled at 3 p.m., the exact hour of the start of the famous April 10, 1949 exhibition contest between the Majors and the Yankees, which the Majors won 4-3.

The event will take place outside of the gate to what once was “Majors Stadium” on Houston Street, between Jordan and Henry Streets, in downtown Greenville.

The event is scheduled to include the playing of the National Anthem, the announcement of the line ups for the Yankees and Majors, the ‘throwing out of the first pitch’, a group singing of ‘Take Me Out To The Ball Game’ and more.
