Repairs needed at Sixth Grade Center, GHS

GREENVILLE — Major repairs are needed to two local school campuses.

The Greenville Independent School District Board of Trustees is scheduled this week to vote to approve fixing a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit at the Sixth Grade Center, as well as a portion of the roof at Greenville High School.

Both votes are included under Tuesday’s regular agenda, starting at 6 p.m. in the Wesley Martin Administration Building, 4004 Moulton Street.

According to a memo presented to the board, campuses within the district have approximately 645 HVAC units of which 287 units (44.4 percent) are fifteen years old or older. This year’s exceptionally cold winter strained the units, which led to more repairs and replacements being needed.

The HVAC for the gymnasium at the Sixth Grade Center is one of the units requiring replacement.

Ken Parker Services has offered to replace four Lennox 12.5 Ton 3 Phase Package Units on the gym for  $51,750. Any expenditure exceeding $25,000 for a single purchase and $50,000 aggregate in a 12 month period requires board approval.

Although budgeted funds are available to pay for the repairs, the memo explains that only six months have passed in the current budget year and it is expected additional HVAC units will need repair and/or replacement.

The Greenville ISD received an insurance payment of almost $156,000 for hail damage in 2008, money deposited and budgeted for expenditure during the current school year.

Windows on doghouses on the Greenville High School roof over the common areas are leaking and need replacement. Blackland Glass has provided an estimate of $56,300, which also requires board approval.
