Heat advisory in effect today

GREENVILLE — Hunt County is sweltering through the hottest stretch of the year so far, with a heat advisory issued for the region through 7 p.m. this evening.

A high of 100 degrees was reported Thursday at Majors Field, the City of Greenville Municipal Airport, marking the third day in a row and the fifth day this summer the official high temperature reached the triple digits. But it won’t be the last.

The National Weather Service is calling for another high between 100 and 103 degrees today, with heat indices — what it feels like when the humidity is factored in — between 105 and 108 degrees.

The combination of heat and humidity is expected to result in elevated conditions for those with heat-related health problems.

The heat is expected to remain in place across the region through at least Thursday of next week.

The National Weather Service is advising area residents:

— To check on individuals who may have health problems and the elderly, as they are most susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

— Never leave young children, pets or the disabled in an enclosed vehicle, even for a short time, as temperatures can quickly rise to life-threatening temperatures.

— Wear sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor of 15 or higher.

— Check on children often, especially if they are playing outside in high temperatures.

— Plan strenuous outdoor activity for early morning or evening when the temperature is lower.

—  Take frequent breaks when working outside.

— Dress infants and children in cool, loose clothing. Shade their heads and faces with hats or an umbrella.

— Check with a doctor about the effects of sun and heat when taking prescription drugs, especially diuretics or antihistamines.
