GEUS: No big demands on power just yet

GREENVILLE — Greenville residents and businesses appear to be doing their part at keeping tabs on the thermostat during the current heat wave.

GEUS, the local electric utility system, has yet to come close to the record peak usage of electricity, despite a string of days with high temperatures soaring into the triple digits.

“I believe 106 megawatts is what we hit Thursday,” GEUS Consumer Services Manager Jimmy Dickey said Friday. “That is well below the 121 megawatts we set in August 2011.

The previous 118 megawatt record demand was set by GEUS during August 2010.

Dickey explained the record peaks are usually set during August, as that is when not only do the temperatures soar during the afternoons, but don’t drop below the 80s during the overnight hours.

“We really haven’t had that just yet,” he said.

In June 2010, GEUS officials dedicated and put into operation the Tom Darte Energy Center, a 25 megawatts power plant adjacent to the steam plant on Power Lane in far north Greenville.

The facility is used to provide electricity during times of peak local demand.
