Custody hearing scheduled for seized dogs

A hearing is scheduled today to determine who will take custody of dozens of dogs seized last week from a south Hunt County residence.

Hunt County law enforcement officials joined June 18 with representatives from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Texas in serving a search warrant at the mobile home on County Road 3621, off of FM 751, which resulted in the seizure of 45 dogs from the residence.

The investigation into the incident is continuing and animal cruelty charges are reportedly pending against the owner of the home.

The SPCA of Texas transported the animals to the Perry Animal Care Center in McKinney, where the small, mixed-breed dogs are being examined by medical staff and will be cared for until the custody hearing, set for 10 a.m. today at the office of Hunt County Justice of the Peace for Precinct 4 David McNabb in Quinlan.

If the SPCA of Texas is awarded custody of the animals, they would be individually evaluated for potential adoption or placement on a case by case basis.
