Council to award tourism funding

GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council is set Tuesday to award tourism funding to help support the Cotton Patch Classic bicycle ride in September.

The Council is scheduled to award the event $15,000, with the vote during Tuesday’s regular session, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street.

The City of Greenville charges a tax of 7 percent on each night’s stay in a local hotel or motel room and then divides the money among the various groups which have applied for the funds. The events they sponsor must enhance and promote tourism and/or the convention and hotel industry in Greenville.

The applications are reviewed by the Tourism and Convention Advisory Board, then the board’s recommendations are presented to the City Council, which has the final say.

According to a memo from Main Street Manager Doyle Dick, the Tourism Board met on May 23 and heard a presentation from Christa

Compton and Jerry Grady, representing the Cotton Patch Classic (CPC). The 17th annual CPC bike ride will be held September 21.

“Proceeds from the tour ride benefit youth through the YMCA of Greenville and Hunt County youth programs and the Greenville Rotary Club’s children’s programs,” Dick said. “ In 2012, the CPC had 690 participants, of which 70 were from Greenville.  The majority of riders were from the Metroplex, with some from Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Texarkana, Oklahoma, Colorado, New York, Missouri, Arkansas, Ohio, Illinois, North Carolina, Louisiana and Kansas.”

Dick said as many as 1,200 riders are expected to be on hand this year.

“The Plano Athletic Cycling Club will use the CPC weekend as a training event and host rides on Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” Dick said.
