First big chill of fall in weekend forecast

— This weekend’s forecast holds some promising news for anyone wanting to know when it is going to feel like fall outside.

Another chance of much-needed rain and the arrival of autumn-like cooler temperatures are expected in North Texas as a cold front blows into the region between Friday night and early Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

A few areas around Hunt County saw a passing shower Wednesday, although they were hardly enough to lift the region out of the continuing drought conditions. Greenville also recorded another high temperature of around 90 degrees Wednesday.

Friday’s forecast was calling for another mostly sunny day, with a high near 89 by the afternoon, and with winds gusting out of the south as high as 20 mph.

There is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday night, but mainly after 1 a.m. Saturday, with a low around 61.

There is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday morning, with a forecast high temperature near 68 and winds gusting out of the north as high as 25 mph.

The low Saturday night is expected to dip into the upper 40s, with north winds gusting as high as 20 mph.

But before anyone starts planning on igniting a bonfire to ward off the nighttime chill, remember that Hunt County remains under a ban on outdoor burning due to the severe drought.

Under the ban no outdoor burning is permitted in the unincorporated areas of the county, including the burning of household garbage. The order does not restrict the outdoor use of welding, cutting torches and other similar tools, provided a separate individual is present to observe for fires and sparks and to have some type of fire extinguisher present.

The order does not prohibit outdoor cooking but it does restrict the cooking activities to an enclosed apparatus, designed for cooking purposes.
