Greenville Police Department warns of telephone scam

GREENVILLE — On June 24, 2013, the Greenville Police Department responded to a home in the 3000 block of Lark Street in reference to impersonation of a public servant. The responding officer contacted a man who stated that he had received a voicemail message from a person identifying himself as Chief Daniel Busken, stating that the person needed to call a number in reference to a fraud complaint.

The victim stated that he received a phone call from 903-457-2900 at approximately 4:45 p.m., and that the call had gone to voicemail. The victim stated that when he listened to the message, a person with heavily accented English identified himself as Chief Daniel Busken, and indicated that fraud complaint had been received.

The message stated that the man needed to call the telephone number 646-719-8342 and speak to a Detective Mark White with the “Federal Crimes Department” or that the caller would send officers to the man’s residence and arrest him.

The victim contacted the Greenville Police Department, and was told that the phone call did not come from the department.

The responding officer ran an Internet search on the number 646-719-8342, and discovered that several people had posted that they received a call from this number and that the caller identified himself as a different law enforcement officer from around the country and would make the same statement about having a fraud complaint filed on the receiver.

The Greenville Police Department asks that anyone receiving a similar call or with additional information about this case contact 903-457-2900.
