Farming, flying, frequencies and freedom focus of events in Hunt County Saturday

GREENVILLE — Several big events are on tap across Greenville and Hunt County Saturday:

— The Farmers Market in downtown Greenville is open 8 to 11 a.m., with a free class starting at 9:30 a.m. on building, pricing and maintaining green houses.

— A Juneteenth observance, with the theme of “Hot dogs in the Park — Celebrating Texas African-American independence” is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at Graham Park and is being sponsored by the Greenville Branch of the NAACP. The Greenville Men of Valor, Greenville North Community, Corporation for Cultural Diversity of Greenville and KKVI Radio are among the co-sponsors. Activities being planned include a basketball tournament, checkers and dominoes tournaments and more. Volunteers are being sought for the event and those wanting additional information can call 903-455-2205. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is the remembrance of June 19, 1865, when the enslaved in Galveston received word of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation.

— The Sabine Valley Amateur Radio Association (SVARA) will be participating in the annual nationwide emergency communications exercise known as Field Day. The organization will be setting up Saturday morning at the Hunt County Fairgrounds , 9800 Jack Finney Boulevard in Greenville. Anyone interested in learning more about amateur radio is invited to attend and get a first-hand look at the event, which will be operating from noon Saturday until noon Sunday. Interested persons can also learn how to get their own FCC radio license.

— Aviation enthusiasts are being invited to come celebrate the beginning of the summer today. The Rockin’ M Airport (formerly Taylor Airport) is hosting the “Dogs Days of Summer Fly-In”, continuing through Sunday. The airport is 10 miles south of Greenville, and three miles north of Quinlan at 6734 County Road 3511. Scheduled activities include karaoke, a bounce house, food and beverages and more. Camping is available at the airport on a first come, first serve basis. Those wanting additional information can visit the airport’s web site at www.t14airport.com.
