VanGundy steps down as director of parks and rec

GREENVILLE — Colby VanGundy, the director of the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department, will be stepping down July 19 to take the same position in Victoria, Texas.

“It is a great opportunity for me and my family,” he said. “It’s a larger town, down there near Houston.”

VanGundy highlighted Graham Park as his greatest accomplishment during his tenure in Greenville and thanked the Greenville community.

“I’ve enjoyed working here,” he said. “Greenville has a lot to offer; it is a real good community and one that has been very kind to me. I’m going to miss it. This was a tough decision and we stewed on it for a long time, but we just felt like it was the best time to go and advance my career.”

VanGundy said that the department completed a lot of projects while he was director and that he hopes the city continues to build up the recreation programs.

Interim Greenville City Manager Massoud Ebrahim said that he couldn’t discuss personnel matters, but that all of the Parks and Recreation Department’s summer programs would continue as planned.

“We’re going to keep everything going with no interruption,” he said. “We’ll use all of our resources to keep everything running.”

Ebrahim did not say when or if the city would begin to search for a new director of Parks and Recreation, or if he would appoint an interim director.

“Colby is the director until July 19,” he said. “If we are going to do anything, it would happen after that date.”

VanGundy joined the Parks and Recreation Department in 2007 and was named the director in September of 2008.

He has a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise and sports services from Tarleton State University.
