Changes planned for tree lighting ceremony

GREENVILLE — Yes, there will be an official City of Greenville Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony this year, although there are some changes planned for the ceremony.

For one, the 23rd annual event has been moved from the Police and Courts facility, where it has been observed for several years, to in front of the Hunt County Courthouse.

And the Parks and Recreation Department, which is hosting the lighting, said Thursday that instead of just one large Christmas tree, plans call for there to be “a couple” of trees which will be lit during the ceremony.

“Christmas On The Square” is scheduled between 5:30 and 8 p.m. Dec. 5 and will include Christmas carolers, holiday refreshments, carriage rides, a performance from the Studio A Dance Company and pictures with Santa Claus.

The night will also include the announcement of the winners of the Parks and Recreation Department’s Christmas Coloring Contest.

The Parks and Recreation Department will be involved in helping decorate the courthouse with Christmas lights and decorations in the days leading up to the event, and is encouraging all nearby businesses to do the same.

Those wanting additional information can contact the department by calling 903-457-2994.
