Windy and warm changing to cold, wet

No frozen precipitation in the forecast

GREENVILLE — Area residents found themselves buffeted by powerful winds Thursday, as the temperature rose sharply from the frigid lows earlier this week.

It is expected to be another warm — but not quite as blustery — day today, before the weather changes once again back to cold and wet conditions for the weekend.

No frozen precipitation was in the National Weather Service forecast as of Thursday evening, although areas just to the northwest could be in for a wintry mix by Sunday.

Hunt County was listed under a “very high” danger of grass and wild fires Thursday by the Texas A&M Forest Service, due to the continued dry weather and the arrival of winds gusting out of the south. Winds were clocked at Majors Field, the City of Greenville Municipal Airport, at up to 37 mph Thursday.

There were scattered reports of some tree limbs being snapped and a power line was blown down along Lee Street in downtown Greenville during the morning, although Hunt County Emegency Management Coordinator Richard Hill said there were no reports of any structural damage.

“Trash cans are being blown everywhere and we have had lawn furniture blown everywhere, but no damage of any consequence,” Hill said.

The National Weather Service forecast was calling for a chance of drizzle or fog before noon today, before skies turn mostly sunny, with a high near 68. Winds will remain out of the south with gusts as high as 25 mph.

There is another chance of drizzle overnight, with a low of 56, with winds continuing to gust of the south.

It is expected to rise to near 65 again Saturday, before the winds shift out of the north again during the afternoon, with a low near 34 by Sunday morning.

Although Hunt County is expected to see a slight chance of rain Sunday, with a high near 39, across northern and western sections of North Texas the airmass should be cold enough for rain to mix with sleet or freezing rain.
