Robbery-shooting suspect eyes bond reduction

GREENVILLE — A local man, arrested in connection with last week’s reported robbery/shooting on Broadview Street in Greenville, is seeking a reduction in his almost $1 million in bonds on the charges.

At the time of the shooting, Christopher Steven Martin of Greenville was already free on bond on multiple charges in connection with a January 2 incident on Walworth Street. Martin is now facing multiple counts of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault involving the January 15 shooting.

Martin, 31, remains in custody at the Hunt County Jail in lieu of a total of $985,000 in bonds. Martin filed a writ of habeas corpus Tuesday from the jail, seeking a reduction in his bond and/or the appointment of an attorney to represent him. A hearing on the writ had not been scheduled with the 196th District Court as of Wednesday evening.

Martin was arrested shortly before 1 p.m. January 15 by the Cumby Police Department for evading in a motor vehicle. Martin was being sought for questioning following the shooting in the 2500 Block of Broadview about one hour earlier.

During the investigation at the Broadview address, investigators were able to identify Martin as one of the active participants in the shooting. Martin was later charged with five counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, with $535,000 in bonds set on the charges.

Martin is the same individual who was charged with three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of disorderly conduct-abusive language in connection with a shots fired call incident in the 1200 block of Walworth Street. Martin had been freed from custody after posting $75,500 bond.

Upon learning of the January 15 incident, the Hunt County District Attorney’s Office moved to declare Martin’s original bonds on the firearms possession charges insufficient.

The bonds were raised to $150,000 each on the charges.
