Two accidents shut down interstate

Two accidents on Interstate 30 Eastbound, one in the morning and a fatal accident in the afternoon, shut down the highway for hours.

The first wreck occurred Friday morning after a van pulling a trailer struck a guard wall and rolled over.

An F-350 van pulling a box-type trailer with no sway bars attempted to pass an 18-wheeler at approxmiately 10:15 a.m. Friday morning, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Lonny Haschel. As the van began to pass the 18-wheeler, it is believed that high winds caused the trailer and van to whip back and forth, at which time the van struck the wall and rolled over.

The driver, whose name was not released at press time, was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. DPS is still investigating the crash. Three children who were in the van were unhurt.

It took DPS about 10 minutes to arrive on the scene. Commerce Emergency Corps, AMR Hunt County and the Campbell and Lone Oak Fire Departments also responded to the call.

The second wreck was a fatality accident involving an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer and a Ford F-250 pick-up truck. The accident occurred around 3 p.m. The 18-wheeler was traveling in front of the truck when the driver reduced speed due to traffic congestion ahead.

The driver of the truck did not notice the reduction in speed in time and attempted evasive actions. The driver of the truck was pronounced dead on the scene, while the driver of the 18-wheeler was uninjured.

A child passenger in the F-250 was transported to a Dallas-area children’s hospital. No names have been released as of press time, pending the notification of next of kin.

The eastbound lanes of I-30 were closed for several hours following the crash.
