Severe drought conditions remain in area

This week’s storms did almost nothing to stop the spread of worsening drought conditions in Hunt County and across North Texas.

Hunt County remains listed under a “severe” drought, with “extreme” level conditions knocking on the doorstep.

The latest readings for the United States Drought Monitor, compiled Tuesday and released Thursday, reveal that all of Hunt County is listed under a severe drought, along with all of Fannin and Rockwall counties. Portions of Kaufman, Rains and Van Zandt counties were also reported to be under severe droughts as of this week.

All but the southeast corner of Collin County was reported under an extreme drought, according to the monitor.

There had been some brief heavy rains reported across portions of the area this week. Some rain gauges in and near Greenville received approximately two inches from powerful thunderstorms which popped up Tuesday and Thursday.

The official readings are taken at Majors Field, the City of Greenville Municipal Airport, which has only seen about an inch of rain the entire month, compared to a 30-year average of 4.18 inches of rain during June.

The City of Greenville obtains water from Lake Tawakoni, which as of Friday was reported at a level of 429.18 feet, more than eight feet below the spillway. One year ago, Tawakoni was reported to have a level of 431.98 feet.
