Temperatures rising

GREENVILLE — It seems the heat of another Texas summer has arrived in North Texas.

Greenville recorded an official high temperature of 90 degrees Monday afternoon, the first of several 90-degree highs this week.

There were also a few clouds around during the day, but chances for rain have evaporated from the National Weather Service forecast until at least Friday.

Monday’s high temperature at Majors Field, the City of Greenville Municipal Airport, hit 90 degrees twice Monday; at 2:35 and again at 5:15 p.m., while remaining in the upper 80s the rest of the afternoon. And while it was sticky — with the humidity topping 50 percent at one point — winds also gusted out of the south at up to 20 miles per hour, keeping conditions from being too uncomfortable.

Greenville suffered through an average summer during 2013, with 19 days when the temperature climbed to 100 degrees or higher, between June 28 and September 6; including nine days between August 1-11, including a high of 106 degrees on Aug. 7, 2013.

The airport recorded 21 days of triple digit temperatures between Memorial Day and Labor Day 2012.

Both years were a breeze compared to the summer of 2011 in Greenville, when there were 63 days of triple digit heat between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with a 40-day run on afternoons with highs of 100 degrees or above, between July 2 and Aug. 11, 2011. There 15 days that summer when the high hit 106 degrees and three straight days when it reached 109. A final 100-degree day occurred locally on Sept. 19, 2011 setting a record high temperature for the day.

The National Weather Service forecast is calling for mostly sunny skies and highs at or just above 90 degrees each afternoon through Friday, with a slight chance of rain in the forecast between Friday night and Monday morning.
