Reciting words of freedom

Local attorneys to read Declaration of Independence at courthouse today

GREENVILLE — On the eve of the 238th birthday of the United States, local attorneys intend to gather in downtown Greenville to read the words which helped create the country.

Members of the Hunt County Bar Association are scheduled today to present a public reading of the Declaration of Independence, starting at 11:30 a.m. on the north steps of the Hunt County Courthouse.

Katherine Ferguson said the reading is sponsored by the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (TCDLA).

“This is the first time we’ve done it and I’ve organized it,” Ferguson said.

The TCDLA began scheduling July 3 readings of the Declaration in 2010.

“They are having readings in more than 70 cities across Texas this year,” Ferguson said.

The public is invited to attend the event.
