Decision due on YMCA/event center

GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council intends to make a decision next week on whether to proceed with the YMCA/event center project.

City Manager Massoud Ebrahim said an item was to be added to the agenda for the Tuesday, July 8 meeting.

“It is going to be for a vote,” Ebrahim said. “Right now we are working on whether it will be a resolution or an ordinance on whether to proceed with the project.”

Ebrahim said the city council agenda, which usually is posted on Friday afternoon, will be released later today due to the city offices being closed Friday,

“We are still working on the draft,” Ebrahim said Wednesday afternoon, adding that organizers behind the project are also expected to make a presentation to the council.

The status of the $15 million facility has been in limbo for months. Voters approved bonds for the project in May 2013, but the center has not been included under Ebrahim’s proposed city budget for next year.

The budget does include a one-cent increase in the property tax rate, to help pay for the first phase of rebuilding streets under a bond package also approved by local voters last year.

Ebrahim has said the tax impact on selling bonds for the YMCA/event center would depend on whether the council wanted to proceed with the facility. Should the council give the go-ahead Tuesday, the bonds would be sold in early 2015.

Until then, the city could proceed under a reimbursement resolution passed last year, which would authorize up to $2.5 million in spending and result in an additional two-cent tax increase next year.

Ebrahim said selling the bonds would add another 4 to 7 cents to the tax rate.
