Council expected to vote on sale of building

GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council is scheduled to vote tonight to approve the sale of a local building at a steep discount.

The council has been asked to sign off on the sale of the property at 2800 Oneal Street for $5,000. The vote is included as part of tonight’s regular session agenda, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is scheduled for 5 p.m. today.

In a memo to the council, City Attorney Daniel Ray said the building had been foreclosed on by the Hunt County tax Asessor-Collector’s office for overdue taxes.

“The office conducted a statutorily-required tax resale process, but no bidders offered the minimum bid,” Ray said. “The property was struck off of the tax rolls, and has fallen into a state of massive disrepair.”

The minimum bid had been $20,904.75, although the Tax Assessor-Collector Randy Wineinger is asking all taxing entities with jurisdiction on the property to approve the new bid of $5,000 cash.

Jerry McGee, who placed the bid, is planning on making renovations to the property for a possible commercial/retail use.
