Disturbance reported in county jail

GREENVILLE — The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office reported a minor, damp and messy disturbance occurred inside the county jail Sunday night.

Sheriff Randy Meeks said no one was hurt during the incident, which occurred at around 7 p.m. Sunday in one of the cell tanks at the Hunt County Detention Center.

“One inmate refused to enter the tank and minimum force was used to place the inmate inside the cell tank,” Meeks said. “This inmate plus four more inmates in the same tank flooded the tank and were banging on the door. They eventually began throwing wet toilet paper on the windows of the tank so that Detention Officers were unable to see in.”

Meeks said order was restored within a short period of time and the original inmate was removed and placed in a solitary cell.

“No officers or inmates were injured and there will be disciplinary action taken against the persons flooding the jail and kicking the doors,” Meeks said.

Meeks said he was on his way to Austin for a jail conference when he received the call about the disturbance.

“Jail Administrator Lee Grenienger was called in and he kept me appraised of the situation,” Meeks said, commending the jail staff, “and Sgt. King with their professional and expedite response to this situation before it got out hand. It doesn’t take but one small spark to start a fire.”
