Almost time for back to school events

GREENVILLE — It may seem like the school year just ended, but students will be returning in a few weeks to classrooms across the area to begin the fall semester.

At least two agencies are working to make sure those students have the school supplies they need to start the academic year.

— The annual Tools For School event is scheduled between 8 and 10 a.m. August 10 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church, 6801 Wesley Street.

Hundreds of children and their parents will likely be in line get free haircuts and backpacks filled with needed school supplies. Tools For School typically assists more than 1,000 economically disadvantaged students  in kindergarten through sixth grade at Greenville Independent School District, Phoenix, Greenville Christian School and Mineral Heights campuses. A group of women from Greenville started the not-for-profit organization in 2004 and that first year the group gave out 600 backpacks, with 1,000 the next year.

— Hundreds of students also turn out for the Back To School Extravaganza sponsored each summer by the Greenville North Community Association. This year’s giveaway, for kids in kindergarten through 12th grade, is hosted by Love and Faith Fellowship Church and will take place between 9 and 11 a.m. August 24 at the Boys and Girls Club/Reecy Davis Center, 4320 Lee Street. The event will provide free school supplies, haircuts and uniforms while they last.

Pre-registration sign-ups for both events are scheduled August 5, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at Ridgecrest Baptist Church;  on August 6 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Love and Faith Fellowship, 1009 Rees Street and from 5-7 p.m. at Ridgecrest Baptist Church; and on August 7 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at Love and Faith Fellowship. Parents must bring a copy of each student’s most current report card or Certificate of Completion for students entering Kindergarten. The student must be enrolled in Bowie, Carver, Crockett, Lamar, Travis, 6th Grade Center, Phoenix, Greenville Christian School or Mineral Heights Christian Academy.
