Keeps on rolling

GREENVILLE — Hundreds of children and their parents rolled into Skate Safari in Greenville Friday, for three hours of free fun.

The Greenville Police Department’s Skating Friday, part of the 17th Annual Summer of Safety program, was a big hit. Officer James Hamilton credited the staff of Skate Safari for the effort they put in to making the event a success.

“They really went above and beyond for us and we appreciate it,” Hamilton said.

Within the first 30 minutes, more than 230 pairs of skates had been checked out and the floor was filled with kids going around in circles, holding hands, forming chains or occasionally dipping under the limbo stick. When not skating, the participants raided the snack bar or just hung out and talked.

Hamilton and fellow Greenville Police Department Student Services Officer Richard Calender have been in charge of the Summer of Safety, which has also included Fishing Friday, Swimming Friday and Movie Friday and which will conclude with the Teen Police Academy next week.

Hamilton and Calender have been assisted by volunteers from the Greenville Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, the Greenville Police Explorers post and the Greenville High School PALs program.
