Probation issued in dog fighting case

GREENVILLE — A Greenville man has been placed on probation after admitting to being a member of a local dog fighting ring.

Dakalin Dyquez Edwards also pleaded guilty to stealing a vehicle in October of last year.

Edwards, 19, entered guilty pleas during a March 17 hearing in the 354th District Court to one count each of dog fighting and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Edwards entered open pleas, meaning that no plea bargain agreement had been arranged in the cases and that Edwards is subject to the full range of punishment.

During a Thursday morning sentencing hearing, Judge Richard A. Beacom placed Edwards on five years of deferred adjudication probation on both charges, to run concurrently.

Deferred adjudication probation carries no finding of guilt, although those defendants who are found to have violated a deferred probation are subject to being sentenced to the maximum punishment.

Edwards was one of three Greenville residents indicted in connection with a dog fighting ring which had been operating in the city. Edwards received one indictment for dog fighting, alleging he incited two dogs to fight on April 8, 2013.

Edwards was also alleged to have stolen a vehicle from a female victim on Oct. 3, 2013.

Edwards was facing a maximum sentence on the charges of up to two years in state jail, and an optional fine of up to $10,000.
