Reward offered in burned cat case

WILLS POINT — Hunt County law enforcement and prosecutors have joined with an animal rescue organization to determine who severely injured a cat last month.

The SPCA of Texas announced Monday that it is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who allegedly burned a cat in the Cochise Village neighborhood of Wills Point on March 11. The cat suffered third degree burns down its back and on its ears, and is currently in the care of a veterinarian.

Residences in Cochise Village have Wills Point mailing addresses, but are located in far south Hunt County.

The office of Hunt County Constable Precinct 1 Terry Jones is investigating the case. The SPCA of Texas indicated it would be working with Jones and Hunt County District Attorney Noble Walker in the prosecution against whomever is alleged to have committed the crime.

The SPCA of Texas announcement added that animal cruelty is often an early warning sign of violent tendencies that will be acted out against people. Childhood cruelty to animals has been linked to later antisocial and aggressive behavior in several retrospective studies.

"There is a well-documented link between animal cruelty and human violence." said SPCA of Texas President James Bias. "Helping the Hunt County Constable bring this individual to justice will help stop the cycle of abuse.”

Anyone with information on the case is being asked to contact the SPCA of Texas at 214-461-1850.
